Changes To Mini Soccer:
Sinclair Park is once again making some changes with the format of mini soccer. In light of concerns expressed to us last year by parents, we are looking at a new way of breaking down teams so that the ages of all players on a team are much more realistic.
For many years, we have done registrations based off of the year of a child's birth, rather than their physical age. This year, we will be changing things up a bit, and registrations will be based off of the child's actual age. Firstly, we will now be accepting registrations for 9 year old players, provided that they are still 9 by the end of June when the season ends. Secondly, we will no longer be accepting 3 year old players, only players who are age 4 as of May 1st, 2020. We know that this will be a disappointment for some parents, but there is a huge difference between a 3 year old and a 6 year old, particularly regarding size.
These changes mean that we will accept players born between June 30th, 2011 and May 1st, 2016.
There are two possible ways to break the teams out, and which one ends up being chosen will depend entirely on the number of coaches that volunteer. The more people we have volunteering to coach, the more teams we can make and the more children can play. Here are the two possible ways to break the teams out:
In this case, our younger teams will consist of children ages 4, 5 and 6. The older teams will be players aged 7, 8 and 9. Players who turn 7 in either May or June will have the option to choose whether they play with the younger group or the older one. No other players will have the option to play up or down. In this scenario, the younger teams will play on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00 PM, and the older teams will also play on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:15 PM.
If we have enough coaches, the teams will be broken down into 4/5, 6/7, and 8/9. Children who turn either 6 or 8 in either May or June will have the option to choose whether to play up a level or down a level. No other children will have the option to change which age bracket they are playing in. If this is the scenario, the 4/5's will play on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00 PM, and the 8/9 teams will also play on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:15 PM. The 6/7 teams will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 PM.
The other major change that we will be bringing in to effect for 2020 is a limit on the number of other players that a child can request to play with. Our convenor had a very hard time making teams last year because there were some players that had requested to play with five or six other children. This made it extremely hard to keep the teams balanced, especially when we try to keep the teams balanced by age. As of 2020, players can only request to play with one other person. To prevent strings of players from requesting three quarters of a team, each of the players must request the other in order to be considered. This means that Player A would have to request to play with Player B, and Player B must in turn request Player A. Player B cannot instead request Player C. Requests that are not mutual will not be given consideration. The one exception to this is siblings or other family members, provided that they are playing in the same age bracket.
The goal in changing the number of players that can request to play with each other is twofold. The first reason is to make it easier to balance teams out. The second reason is to prevent the one or two children on a team who did not request to play with the others from being left out of play.
We welcome feedback from parents regarding the new changes. This is going to be something that we try for a year and see if the experience is a good one, both for parents and children.
If you have any questions about the new format, please let us know!
The time is almost upon us for the 2020 sports season! Registrations will begin at the end of February, and will continue through mid April. The registration dates are as follows:
The fee for 2020 Mini Soccer will be $76.00. This fee is all inclusive, and includes your child's soccer jersey and soccer ball, as well as their $13.00 field usage fee. The fee is partially subsidizable, with the exception of the field usage fee. The subsidizable amount is $63.00.
Great news! Mini soccer will be moving back home to Sinclair Park for 2020! All games will be played at Sinclair Park, with the fields being drawn out back behind the gym. This means that registrations, games, and the windup will all take place in the same location this year!
